WAR MEMORIAL CHURCH
SERVICES
Regular church services will start again at 9am on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. The first of these will be a Mothers' Day service on Sunday the 12th of May 2024.
Services were on hold because of the damage to the church caused by Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023.Repair and restoration work is ongoing and we are incredibly grateful to all those who have worked so hard supporting the church and the local community as we heal from the devastation the cyclone caused.
Notice Board
There was an ANZAC Service held at Eskdale War Memorial Church on Thursday 25th April 2024. The church was overflowing, and it was wonderful to be able to share this day of remembrance with our community again.
Services since Cyclone Gabrielle:
The Church's First Congregational Service since the cyclone was held on Wednesday 13th December - exactly ten months since the cyclone first hit the Valley.
Eskdale War Memorial Church held a small ANZAC Service on 25 April 2023. Most people watched online, and the small gathering stood or brought chairs and then gathered beside the piles of silt outside for the Last Post and the raising and lowering of the flag. You can view the service here
We were also able to hold a carol service before Christmas which had more than 100 attendees and was a real celebration of the community being able to come together in this special place. You can see coverage of this event here and here.
There was also a service held on Christmas morning.
A community gathering and tree planting was held on the 14th of February 2024, the first anniversary of Cyclone Gabrielle. The gathering was attended by about 180 people who lit candles of remembrance and shared a toast and a meal. The bell was rung, the flag raised, and a kowhai tree was planted. It was a special day, full of emotion and support for all those impacted, and appreciation of all those who had come to help and the new friendships made.
